If you want to start a swimwear line, there is no better time than now. The global market value for swimwear in 2021 was around 22.71 billion USD, and it is expected to reach a whopping 29.1 billion USD by 2025. There is a lot of opportunities in this ever-growing industry but it can be an overwhelming task to start a swimwear line from scratch. The main reason is the lack of proper resources available online. That is why this article is geared for anyone wanting to start their own swimwear line from scratch. You will learn everything from naming your swimwear line to strategies for acquiring more customers. Without further ado, let’s get started.
Naming your swimwear line
This is the first step to starting a swimwear line. The name of your business used to be an obsolete thing. After all the customer service and the quality of products is what helps to elevate the growth of your swimwear business. However, the times have changed. Nowadays the name of your business creates an identity your customers can associate with. The name and logo of your swimwear line should be the most valuable asset your swimwear line possess.
Choose a name that sounds nice, is easy to remember, fits with your brand, and is relevant for your industry. It may take some time, but that’s okay. If you are having difficulty choosing a name for your swimwear brand, I would highly recommend using Shopify’s Business Name Generator tool. It is a completely free tool and helps you brainstorm a brandable name for your business.
Once you decide on a name for your swimwear line, make sure to check if the name has already been trademarked. You can check this by visiting US Patent and Trademark Office(USPTO) website.
So, you have picked a name for your swimwear line and made sure it is not trademarked. The next step is checking if a domain is available for this name. You can use the tool below to check if the domain name for your business is still available. And if it is, make sure to register it and make it yours today. I will talk more about domain names and creating an online store for your swimwear business in the latter part of this article.

Designing your logo
This is one of the most exciting phases of starting a swimwear line. As I already mentioned, the logo and the name represent the brand identity of your swimwear business. The only thing you’ll need to remember while designing your logo is being different and standing out from hundreds of other swimwear lines.
One of the tools I use when designing logos for my businesses is Looka. This tool gives you everything you’ll need in order to start your swimwear brand and look great from day one. The best part? Their artificial intelligence(AI) technology does the heavy graphic design lifting while giving you all the creative control.
One of the other must-have tools while starting a swimwear line is Canva. It is an awesome graphic designing platform, where you can design anywhere from an Instagram post to an infographic or a branded logo using a drag and drop system. It has both free and paid versions, but you wouldn’t even need a paid version. The free version provides thousands of elements, images, and fonts for absolutely free of cost.
Market and Demographic Research
The two most important questions you need to ask yourself before you start a swimwear line are:
1. Who is your target customer?
If your answer to this question was ‘anyone who needs swimwear’, you are in a completely wrong direction. I absolutely understand, you’ll want to serve as many customers as you can while starting your new business venture. However, this will make you run around like a headless chicken. Not having a specific target customer in mind is the reason why many startups and business ventures fail. Identifying your target customer allows your swimwear business to focus on those most likely to purchase the product. This will help you save money, time, and effort while marketing your product.
Furthermore, defining your target audience will also help your business to go in a certain direction. For example, if your target customer is a high-income middle-aged woman, you’d want to make your swimwear line a luxury brand. On the other hand, if your target customer is a teenager or high school student, you’d want to make your swimwear line an affordable and casual brand.
2. Who are your competitors?
Understanding your competitors will help you identify why would a customer want to buy from you instead of them. Knowing your competitors and the products they offer, will not only help you to make your marketing strategies better but also take advantage of your competitors’ weaknesses, and improve your own business performance.
Sourcing the Swimwears
There are two routes you can go to source your swimwear. The first one is sketching your own swimwear designs and getting a manufacturer to manufacture them for you. However, while you are just starting out I would recommend not going through this route. Of course, if you already know how to sketch designs and have some past experience in manufacturing clothes, this is the best option for you. But the process is just too complex for someone who just wants to start on a small scale and think about manufacturing later.
The next route is sourcing your swimwear through wholesalers and suppliers. There are tonnes of swimwear suppliers in the US and around the globe and some of the most trusted ones are listed below:
Keep in mind, most of the wholesalers and suppliers will have a certain MOQ(Minimum Order Quantity) set in place. Therefore, make sure you order a sample for quality testing before you order the MOQ. Furthermore, I would also suggest not to spend more than $300 – $400 on the initial stock of inventory. Having a small inventory while starting out, will help you not feel the pressure to clear the stocks and can solely focus on the marketing and business side of things.
If you don’t want to spend any money on the inventory, which is what I recommend, then you can go for the dropshipping business model. In this business model, you don’t hold the inventory at all. If an order comes through your online store, you can direct the order to your supplier, who fulfills it on your behalf. For example, if a swimwear costs you $30, you can list it on your online store for $50 and when you get an order, your supplier fulfills the order for just $30 leaving you with $20 from just being a middle man.

Selling swimwears online
I already talked about the domain. And by now, you should have already registered your domain name through Namecheap. If you still haven’t, I highly suggest you register it now as it is really cheap and Namecheap offers domain names from as low as $0.99.
The next phase to start a swimwear line is creating an online platform to sell your products. People always ask me if it is possible to sell your swimwear products entirely through social media, and the answer to that question is YES, it is possible. However, you will need a way to take payment from your customers. Moreover, there is going to be a huge distrust among your customers for your brand if you do not even have a website. Therefore, use social media to gather your audience and market your products. If they want to make a purchase direct them to your online store.
If you are wondering how to create an online store for your swimwear line – don’t worry. The days when you needed to pay thousands of dollars for a website developer for your small business are gone. Thanks to Shopify, you can now create a brand new online store for your business starting just from $29. The cherry on top is that Shopify offers a 14-day free trial (no credit card required) for you to try its platform. This is more than enough time to set up an online store, upload your products, and set up the payment systems.
Once your online store is set up, you will need to connect the domain you bought from Namecheap to Shopify. It is pretty simple and all you need to do is head over to the Domains section of Shopify Dashboard and follow the simple step-by-step guide.
After your domain is connected, you are ready to start your swimwear line and sell your products online. If you want any professional help to set up your Shopify store, please feel free to shoot us a message through this contact form. We will get back to you with the help within an hour.
Creating a digital presence
Whether you are starting a leggings business or a clothing business, you will need to create a digital presence for your brand. The same goes for the swimwear line. Once you have the online store and the inventory to sell – you will need a place to market them. The only tool you’ll need in order to create a digital presence for your swimwear line is social media.
Go ahead and create an email account for your business and set up all the social media account. The most important ones are a Facebook page, and Instagram page, and a TikTok account. All you need to do is post content regularly and engage with your audience. I understand that social media is an organic channel and it takes time to grow your followings, but trust me, once you start getting organic followers, more than half of your overall sales will be generated through these social platforms.
Make sure you post high-quality images and videos on your social channels. You can also ask your customers to send a picture/videos of them wearing your swimwear for you to post on social media. Bear in mind, use social media as a tool to keep your current customers up-to-date and at the same time as a platform to acquire new customers.
Setting up your Swimwear Business
If you want to start a swimwear line on a small scale; you can just operate as a sole proprietorship which requires no registration. However, if your swimwear line takes off and you want to scale it quickly, registering your business as an LLC is a must.
Registering your business will not only help to establish it as a legal entity, but will also provide added benefits like the ability for you to open business bank accounts, enter into contracts, hire employees, and get business licenses and permits.
Once you register your business, the next step is getting an EIN through the IRS website. EIN is a 9-digit number provided by the government to all businesses in order to identify them as tax-paying entities. You will need an EIN while filing taxes, hiring employees, or opening a business bank account.
Starting an LLC is really simple through LegalZoom. Their pricing plans start at just $79 (plus filing fees), and you can add more services as you go.
Marketing a Swimwear Business
Once you complete all the steps above, the next step is acquiring customers. You need to have a strategy in place in order to market your swimwear to potential customers. After all, you want to acquire a customer with the least amount of money spent. Since your swimwear line is predominantly going to be online, digital marketing will play a crucial role in your business. I like to sub-divide digital marketing into two channels and implement a mixture of both into my marketing strategy.
- Organic Channels :
Organic channels include marketing strategies that are completely free, however, they take some time to show results. Search Engine Optimization(SEO) and Social media management are some of the well-known organic channels to market your swimwear business.
- Paid Channels :
Paid channels include marketing strategies where you actively try to acquire customers by spending money. Social media paid ads, influencer marketing, and affiliate marketing are some of the best marketing strategies you can implement in your swimwear business.
